NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A three-alarm fire destroyed a popular Greenwich Village tavern and injured four firefighters Monday evening, fire officials said.
The fire erupted around 6 p.m. at the GMT Tavern located at 142 Bleecker Street just a month after it reopened to the public.
Fire officials managed to evacuate residents without injuries.
"When our units arrived on scene, there was a person on the fire escape on the top floor who began their descent. We then removed that person with the tower ladder basket," said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Michael Ajello.
The blaze caused extensive damage throughout the building and four firefighters sustained minor injuries, Ajello said.
"We have four minor injuries to Firefighters. It’s a difficult task when you have a fire that appears to involve duct work. Cutting the duct work open, accessing it for water application, it’s a tough task for our members.”
