NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 27-year-old Queens man was sentenced to almost 13 years in prison on Tuesday for traveling to Saudi Arabia in an attempt to join ISIS in Syria, according to the Department of Justice.
Ahmed Parvag, a U.S. citizen from Ozone Park, made the trip to Saudi Arabia in 2017, but he was detained before he could reach ISIS-controlled territory in Syria.
“Ahmed nearly fulfilled his goal to join a group of violent terrorists who have killed numerous innocent victims, including American citizens, and expressed that he planned to fight against ‘the West’ if he made it to Syria,” stated U.S. Attorney Breon Peace. “Today’s sentence demonstrates that a significant prison sentence is the end result for radicalized individuals pursuing a misguided path of terror and violence.”
Officials did not provide further details on where specifically he was arrested or the specifics of that operation.
Law enforcement executed a search warrant for Parvag’s computer on July 17, where they found media supporting ISIS and a draft letter bidding farewell to his family.
“[W]e have made it to Dawlatul Islam [ISIS] in Syria. Inshallah [God willing] we will join the Jihad very soon and inshallah [God willing] we will then join the ranks of the Shuhuda [martyrs]. The West has invaded the land of the Muslims and is constantly attacking it.”
He pleaded guilty for attempting to provide material support to ISIS in June 2018.
A Brooklyn federal judge sentenced him to 153 months in prison and 15 years of supervised release.
