NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Queens man has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexually abusing a 7-year-old girl he used to babysit over the course of three years, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced.

The abuse began in 2012 when 43-year-old Jose Nivelo would pick up the young girl from school and take her to his house on Hampton Street. There, Nivelo would grope her body on numerous occasions as well as make her undress in front of him, court documents show.

When the child turned eight, Nivelo moved to another apartment on 97th Street in East Elmhurst where the abuse escalated. Nivelo would repeatedly grope her and have her undress in front of him while also engaging the child in acts of anal and oral sexual conduct, authorities said.

“Instead of providing safe care for this young girl while her mother worked, the defendant has brought unimaginable trauma and pain to the victim by sexually abusing her for years,” Katz said. “The protection of our children is paramount and has remained a top priority throughout my entire career in public service. The defendant will now serve a lengthy prison term for his despicable actions.”

Back in June, Nivelo was convicted of sexual conduct against a child in the first degree. Along with the 23-year prison sentence, Nivelo was sentenced to 15 years of post-release supervision and he will have to register as a sex offender.
