NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Hasidic rabbi who spoke out in support of New York state's COVID-19 safety measures in the spring has died of COVID-19.

R'Mayer Zelig Rispler, 70, passed away last week, the Satmar Hasidic sect tweeted.

"It is with great sadness and heavy heart that we report on the passing of Satmar President and Mega Philanthropist R'Mayer Zelig Rispler OBM who passed away during the night," the sect wrote.

"R'Mayer Zelig was a courageous and dedicated leader who will be missed by the worldwide Satmar Community," it added.

Rispler in April called on Brooklyn's Orthodox Jewish community to follow the state's guidelines aimed at preventing the spread of the virus.
