NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Registration opened and closed within 10 minutes on day one of the New York City $50 FIFA World Cup ticket lottery, which will continue over the next five days as residents attempt to gain affordable entry to the highly-anticipated global event.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced last week that the city will make 1,000 tickets available at $50 a piece, quipping that the price point is equivalent to “five lattes in New York City.”

Lottery registration runs from Monday through Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. each day. A maximum of 50,000 people can sign up, and once those slots fill up, registration closes until 10 a.m. the following day.

Participants must be at least 15 years of age to enter, and it is restricted to one entry per person.

About 150 tickets will be allotted for five group-stage matches and two knockout-round matches as part of the program.

Winners will be randomly selected, notified by email on June 3 and then given 48 hours to buy two $50 tickets. They must be picked up in person on the day of the match, and are non-transferable—a measure to prevent scalping.

The program is also offering winners free round-trip bus service to their matches, and will hand tickets to fans directly as they board the bus on game day.

“A World Cup is coming to our backyard, and we want to ensure working-class New Yorkers have the opportunity to be part of it,” Mamdani said in a statement. “We sat down with the Host Committee to make certain this tournament belongs to the people who make this city what it is.”

The $50 tickets aren’t coming directly from FIFA, but rather those given to the New York New Jersey Host Committee, according to the mayor’s office.
