NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Rescuers are out searching for a 17-year-old boy who was lost in the water off Rockaway Beach on Tuesday, according to authorities.
The teen was reported missing just before 3:30 p.m. near Shorefront Parkway and Beach 73rd St., police said.
NYPD Harbor and Aviation Units have been deployed at the scene, along with FDNY rescue swimmers, officials said. Citizen App video from the scene shows the responding vessels in the water.
“[A 17-year-old] entered the water near or around B73 on Rockaway Beach and went missing. 911 was contacted. All hands are on deck,” NYC Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers said in a post on X. “Please stay clear of the area and let the emergency services work. They’re trying their hardest to locate the individual.”
“Lifting the missing young man and emergency personnel up in prayer,” she added.
Beachgoers flocked to city beaches amid this week’s heat advisory, despite the fact that city beaches are not officially open for swimming until this weekend, when lifeguards begin working for the season.
Lifeguards were also not yet on duty in Ocean City, New Jersey on Tuesday, where another teen went missing after being swept into the waves.
The 19-year-old was reported missing while boogie boarding near the 10th Street beach, officials said. A search is ongoing.
