Serial thief arrested for bashing NYC ice cream shop worker's head with rock: NYPD

Warning: The video above is graphic.

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A serial thief who allegedly attacked a Manhattan ice cream shop worker with a rock during an attempted robbery in January has been arrested, the NYPD said Wednesday.

Luis DeLeon, 50, of Manhattan, was arrested and charged with grand larceny, robbery and petit larceny, police said.

The NYPD earlier this year released disturbing video showing the Jan. 20 attack on the worker at Van Leeuwen Ice Cream on Third Avenue in Kips Bay.

Police say DeLeon walked into the ice cream shop around 10:45 p.m. and ordered ice cream from a 23-year-old woman who was working there.

When the woman looked away, DeLeon took out a large rock and struck her over the head while demanding money, police said.

DeLeon then entered the storage room before fleeing eastbound on East 30th Street, according to police.

The worker suffered a concussion and laceration to her head and was taken to NYU Medical Center by EMS in stable condition, police said.

Police were also seeking DeLeon in connection with several other robberies that took place in Manhattan.

DeLeon allegedly stole a 32-year-old woman's purse at The Maze restaurant on W. 32nd Street on Dec. 27 and lifted a 59-year-old woman's bag from the lobby of the Stewart Hotel on Seventh Avenue on Jan. 7, according to police. No injuries were reported in either of those incidents.

Police also believe he robbed a 19-year-old worker at Kaylee's Creamery on E. 27th Street on Jan. 13. The thief went up to the man working at the shop, pretended he had a weapon and stole $400 from the cash register, police said. No injuries were reported.

DeLeon's attorney information wasn't immediately available Thursday.
