NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Sanitation workers made a gruesome discovery Monday morning when they found a woman's skeletal remains inside a garbage bag while working by a Queens park near John F. Kennedy International Airport, authorities said.

Just before 8 a.m., police responded to a 911 call after sanitation workers noticed a foul odor coming from a taped and roped-up bag they had loaded into their truck's hopper, suspecting the bag contained a body.

Upon arrival at Brookville Boulevard and 149th Avenue, near Idlewild Park, in Springfield Gardens, officers confirmed the discovery. EMS workers later identified the remains as belonging to a woman.

An investigation is ongoing and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and the identity of the woman.
