NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A human skull was found next to the Coney Island Boardwalk on Tuesday evening, according to the NYPD.

The gruesome discovery happened at about 6 p.m., and the skeletal remains were found in the bushes between West 32nd and West 33rd streets, police said.

Investigators searched the discovery area on Wednesday for evidence, many combing the thick brush in white protective suits using rakes and shovels. Additional parts of what officials think are a human body were discovered, police sources said.

It is not known how long the skull has been there or its origins. It is unclear if the search will go beyond this area.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

An investigation is ongoing.
