NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A $780 million, 25,000-seat soccer stadium is coming to Queens and will be the New York City Football Club’s new home, the New York Times reported.
The stadium, set to open in 2027, will be the star of 23-acre development which will also feature a 250-room hotel and 2,500 units of housing at Willets-Point, in the Mets’ backyard.
Plans for the stadium are expected to be announced Wednesday by Mayor Eric Adams after city officials reached an agreement to transform the waterfront section of Queens which has not been in use for some time.
The stadium will go up across the street from Citi Field and will be the first construction of a major league sports venue in New York in a decade.
Thousands of affordable housing units will also be built around the stadium which will be constructed by Related Companies and Sterling Equities, both owned by the Wilpon family, the former owners of the Mets, according to the New York Post.
Sources told the Post that the venture will be entirely privately financed. Much of the subsidies for the plan will be used for infrastructure improvements and property tax breaks, the Times added.
Despite the agreement, the plan will need to go through a months-long Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) process which will begin early next year.
