NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Police are investigating after a student at a Brooklyn high school was caught bringing a loaded gun Thursday morning, authorities said.

According to the NYPD and the School Safety Agent Union, the 9mm gun was spotted at around 8:30 a.m. in the 17-year-old boy's backpack when he passed through the scanners at Westinghouse High School located at 105 Tech Pl. in Downtown Brooklyn.

The weapon had nine bullets in the magazine and one in the chamber, the union added.

The student was taken into custody and charges were pending, cops said.

"Our in-school security scanning quickly discovered, and this item was recovered without incident by our dedicated school staff and school safety agents. All students and staff are safe," the Department of Education said in a statement.

The school was placed on a seven-minute shelter while the weapon was apprehended.

The DOE said that it is offering additional security and support to the school in coming days and is working with the NYPD on follow-up actions.

Instances of weapons brought to New York City Public Schools are down 16.8% since this time last year.

An investigation is ongoing.
