NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — The same day that Gov.
Kathy Hochul announced that New York State will send about 1,000 personnel from the state police, MTA police and National Guard into the subway system to help manage 2024's spike in transit crime, a subway conductor had a glass bottle hit over her head on a Bronx subway train, the NYPD said.
The assault occurred Wednesday morning on a southbound 4 train at the 170th Street subway station in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx.
According to police, officers responded after the female conductor, 38, was struck in the head with a glass bottle.
The victim was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in stable condition, and the perpetrator fled the station on foot, officials said.
Transit crime is up 13% in January and February when compared to the same period in 2023, and a series of high-profile attacks have led to the renewed governmental focus on transit safety.
