NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Cab drivers on Wednesday afternoon shut down the Brooklyn Bridge to demand medallion debt relief from Congress.
Since the pandemic began, ridership has gone down 80 percent leaving drivers drowning in debt, working longer hours and struggling to pay bills to make ends meet.
"We shut down the Brooklyn Bridge because only direct action will get us what we need: medallion debt forgiveness now," the New York Taxi Workers union wrote on Twitter.
After taking the Brooklyn Bridge, dozens of taxi and NYPD vehicles arrived at Senator Chuck Schumer's office near Grand Army Plaza for a press conference on federal relief measures for drivers.
Sen. Schumer later pledged his support and endorsed their debt forgiveness campaign for debt relief for struggling NYC taxi drivers.
