Yonkers Police Detective Sgt. Frank Gualdino, 53, passed away on in Dec. 1, 2022.

YONKERS (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 16-year-old from Yonkers was charged with homicide following a car crash that killed police detective in 2022, prosecutors said Tuesday.

The teen was tried as an adolescent offender and was indicted on a charge of criminally negligent homicide.

The unlicensed teen was driving a BMW in a "criminally negligent manner" along Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers on Dec. 1, 2022, when he allegedly crossed into the oncoming traffic lane.

He then crashed into 53-year-old Yonkers Police Det. Sgt. Frank Gualdino's unmarked police car at around 3:35 p.m., prosecutors said.

Gualdino, a 24-year veteran of the Yonkers Police Department,  was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in the Bronx, where he was later pronounced dead.

On Monday, the Yonkers Police Department took the teen into custody following his surrender.

The teen had his learner's permit for about two weeks when the crash happened, police had said last year.

"My Office has been committed throughout this nearly year-long investigation to seeking accountability in this tragic and devastating incident that took the life of Detective Sgt. Gualdino," Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah said.

Westchester County Court Judge Helen Blackwood set bail at $5,000 cash/$10,000 bond.

The 16-year-old was tried as an adolescent offender and was indicted with criminally negligent homicide.

The defendant is scheduled to appear in court again on Dec. 15.
