'The Gabby Petito Story' will be a Lifetime movie, starts filming in the summer

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Lifetime on Thursday announced that it has greenlit a movie about the disappearance of 22-year-old Long Island native Gabby Petito, who was killed by her fiancé Brian Laundrie last year in a Wyoming national park after the couple embarked on a cross-country trip.

The movie's working title is "The Gabby Petito Story." It will be filmed this summer in Utah and released later this year, Lifetime said.

Emmy-nominated Thora Birch, whose acting credits include "The Walking Dead" and "American Beauty," will direct and co-star in the movie. She will play Petito's mother, Nichole Schmidt.

"'The Gabby Petito Story' will explore Gabby and her fiancé Brian Laundrie’s complicated relationship and what may have gone wrong during their cross-country trip that resulted in Gabby’s tragic murder," Lifetime said in a statement.

"The Gabby Petito Story" is part of Lifetime's "Stop Violence Against Women" public affairs initiative.
