NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — The NYPD is investigating after a tractor-trailer driver fatally struck a motorcyclist on the Long Island Expressway in Queens on Saturday morning.

At approximately 8:32 a.m., police responded to a 911 call of a vehicle collision in the vicinity of Long Island Expressway and Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

Further investigation by the NYPD's Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that a 34-year-old man driving a 2021 Isuzu tractor-trailer was traveling in the right lane of the westbound Long Island Expressway at 63rd Street, when he disobeyed the pavement markings and traveled to the right of it.

When the tractor trailer was crossing over and entering the left exit lane to the westbound Brooklyn Queens Expressway, it struck 24-year-old Gregory Benning who was driving a 2002 R6 Yamaha motorcycle.

Benning was traveling westbound in the left exit lane to the BQE when it struck the passenger side of the tractor-trailer.

The motorcyclist sustained severe trauma to his torso and right thigh and was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the tractor trailer remained on scene.

There have been no arrests made, and an investigation remains ongoing.
