NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Authorities are investigating the theft of about $500,000 in copper wire from a subway station and tunnels in Manhattan.
About 38,000 feet of the wire was stolen from inside the Union Square station, as well as along the N and R tracks leading up to W. 36th Street, officials told the Daily News.
The wire was discovered missing on Oct. 23 as officials looked into an overheating electrical substation at Union Square.
"As soon as it was determined that copper wire was missing from tunnel areas, we launched an internal review and have notified the NYPD and MTA inspector general," MTA spokesperson Tim Minton told the Daily News.
According to the New York Post, 30,000 feet of copper wire was also stolen along the 1, 2 and 3 lines between the 34th Street and Canal Street subway stations—amounting to about $10,000 in losses.
