NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A man shot and wounded an attempted robber in self-defense in Brooklyn on Sunday, police said amid reports the shooter is a retired correction officer.
The shooting happened at about 12:40 p.m. outside of 721 Snediker Ave. in East New York, authorities said.
Upon arrival, officers discovered 19-year-old Ryan Straker with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
EMS transported the Straker to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition.
According to police, the incident was attempted robbery and the shooting was in self defense. During the altercation, a firearm was brandished, which led to a struggle, where the gun was discharged.
No charges have been filed against the gunman. Residents of the area told PIX11 that he may be a retired city correction officer.
Straker was charged with attempted robbery, assault and criminal possesion of stolen property.
The investigation is ongoing.
