NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A black bear was found dead in a parking lot on Staten Island Monday morning, according to reports.
The bear was found in a lot near a Dollar Tree on Richmond Hill Road in New Springville around 6 a.m. on Monday, police told the Staten Island Advance.
The animal, which had an open wound on its side, had “significant trauma to its body,” a source told the Advance.
“The approximately 100-pound bear was removed from the scene and is being taken to [the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s] wildlife pathology laboratory for a necropsy to help determine a cause of death,” the department said in a statement provided to the outlet.
There “is no known population of black bears on Staten Island,” the department added.
