WEATHER: Travel advisory issued ahead of Thanksgiving, NYC expecting impact from severe storms

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – New York City is bracing for a major storm consisting of heavy rain and gusty winds, which may cause severe disruptions in pre-Thanksgiving travel.

Tuesday is set to remain cloudy, with rain expected to sweep across the area from west to east by late afternoon.


Despite the current chill, temperatures will go up to a peak of 48 towards the evening, according to AccuWeather.

The city will see heavy rains Tuesday tonight and it may pose a risk for localized flooding on streets and highways.

New York City Emergency Management has issued a travel advisory for Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

"If you must drive, drive slowly," the advisory read. "Use major streets or highways for travel whenever possible. If you live in a basement apartment in a flood prone area, prepare to move to higher ground."

The National Weather Service is predicting one to two inches of rain for Tuesday night going into Wednesday morning, which could lead to minor flooding in certain areas that are prone to water collection or have bad drainage, especially on Tuesday night.

"This week, as we gear our focus towards family, friends, and all of the things we're grateful for, New Yorkers should also remember to keep an eye on the weather," Mayor Eric Adams said. "We are preparing for heavy rains and strong winds over the next few days, which means everyone should bundle up and wear extra layers when heading outside."

Additionally, strong wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph are expected across the city, with even higher gusts of up to 45 mph possible along the southern coastlines during Tuesday night.

As the winds pick up, temperatures are expected to go into the low to mid-50s, a mild recovery from the day's cold.

Wednesday promises a slow start for travelers with lingering rain clearing out early.

The skies seem to gradually brighten although it will remain breezy and yet rising to 58 degree.The blustery conditions will make it feel cooler, with people feeling it in the low 50s.

Thanksgiving Day will bring a chillier air to the city.

As New Yorkers gather for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, they can expect gusty breezes and a mix of clouds and sun, with the temperatures of 46 and RealFeels dipping into the 30s.

The afternoon climbs to 53, but gusts up to 25 mph will maintain cooler RealFeels in the mid 40s.

The cold  continues into Friday with partly sunny skies and a chill carried on gusty breezes, setting a high of just 49.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday will offer a break from the rain with some sunshine, although it will remain in the cool with highs in the mid-40s.
