NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A manhunt is underway in Brooklyn after an 18-year-old woman was shot in the chest during an attempted purse snatching on a subway platform late Sunday night.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. at the President Street-Medgar Evers College station in Crown Heights.

According to police, the teenage victim was standing on the platform waiting for a downtown 2 train when an unidentified man confronted her and tried to forcefully grab her purse.

When the woman fought the attacker off, the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot her in the chest before fleeing the scene, officials said.

Responding NYPD officers placed the victim into their police cruiser and rushed her to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County where she is in stable condition.

"I'd rather walk, run or take the bus if I could, but I'm going to Manhattan, so I have no choice. But it's very concerning," one neighbor told 1010 WINS.

Investigators later recovered the victim's purse discarded on a sidewalk roughly a mile away from the station.

An investigation is ongoing as authorities search for the shooter.
