NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 72-year-old woman died after a fire tore through her Upper West Side apartment Wednesday night, officials said.
The fire broke out inside an apartment on the third floor of a Frederick Douglass Houses building on Columbus Avenue, near West 102nd Street, around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, the NYPD said.
Emergency responders found the woman unconscious and unresponsive inside the apartment, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police sources told the New York Post the woman had a disability and had been smoking in bed before the blaze broke out.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, the NYPD said.
Police didn't immediately release the woman's name. An investigation is ongoing.
