NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Police arrested a 23-year-old woman who allegedly used a hatchet to slash a woman inside an Upper East Side apartment on Monday night before fleeing and barricading herself inside a freight elevator.
The incident began after a dispute happened between two women inside a mutual friend’s building on East 85th Street near Second Avenue, officials said.
Authorities said the dispute escalated and the suspect slashed the 29-year-old victim in the leg, then she climbed down the building’s fire escape and entered a bodega at East 86th Street and began serving customers.
The suspect stayed in the bodega for about 10 minutes before stealing cigarettes and fleeing, the New York Post reports.
She then hopped on a bus at First Avenue and East 86th Street, riding it one block west the bus before getting off, the outlet adds.
According to police, the woman then locked herself inside a freight elevator of a building on East 86th Street before she was freed by NYPD ESU and taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center with a laceration to her leg, which officials believed she suffered while descending the fire escape.
Investigators are working to determine the motive for the attack.
A hatchet was recovered at the scene, officials said.
Charges against the woman are pending.
