NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 64-year-old woman was hospitalized on Friday night after being threatened by her son, who was carrying a knife, and then going out the window of her third-story apartment in Queens, police said.
It happened just after 9 p.m. at a residential building on Shore Boulevard near 20th Road in Astoria.
The woman was being threatened by her son, a 36-year-old man with over 30 prior arrests according to police, and escaped the scene by falling from her apartment window. It is unclear whether she jumped or was pushed from the window, law enforcement said.
She suffered a broken leg in the fall and was taken to an area hospital.
Lissette Jimenez, the woman’s neighbor, told 1010 WINS that the victim was always trying to help her son. She said that after the woman landed, she ran over to help her, and the victim was crying for help.
“She was talking but she wasn’t moving. She just kept saying ‘My son had a knife, help, help,’” Jimenez said.
Both Anne and Laurie, other neighbors of the woman, said that the suspect is a drug addict and that they always see him smoking K2 (a synthetic cannabinoid that is illegal in New York State) around the corner from his mother’s apartment.
“When he was younger he was in the psych ward. He [has] been in and out of rehab. He just got out of rehab during the summer and he went back to smoking it,” Anne told 1010 WINS.
“I know the son’s just on drugs all the time,” Laurie said. “And he’s always fighting with his mother. There’s always cops here.”
Police are still searching for the man who is at large. An investigation is ongoing.
