NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A woman jumped into the Harlem River in a panic early Sunday morning after she wrecked her car and it went up in flames, police said.

At about 6:27 a.m. on Christmas Eve, officials responded to reports of a single vehicle accident in which an unidentified 23-year-old woman struck a barrier while driving northbound on the FDR near 102nd Street.

When the car collided with the barrier, it became engulfed in flames, police said.

Authorities said that in a bout of panic the woman jumped into the water, though the exact reason is unclear.

She was rescued from the river by fire officials and transported to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for treatment, officials said.

The woman is in police custody and awaiting charges, cops said.

The investigation is ongoing.
