NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A woman was killed in Brooklyn on Sunday when a driver fleeing police slammed into the car she was in, authorities said.

Just before 5:30 a.m., police responded to a motor vehicle collision in the vicinity of Central Avenue and Gates Avenue in Bushwick.

Further investigation by NYPD's Collison Investigation Squad determined a marked police vehicle was attempting to conduct a traffic stop on a Mercedes-Benz driven by 32-year-old Juan Lopez, when he fled westbound on Gates Avenue, traveling at an apparent high rate of speed, in an attempt to evade police

Lopez disobeyed a steady red traffic signal at the intersection of Central Avenue and collided with a Honda Pilot driven by a 34-year-old woman traveling southbound on Central Avenue with a green light.

The Mercedes then lost control and mounted the sidewalk, where it came to stop, according to officials.

Subsequently, 29-year-old Micah Dukes, the rear passenger in the Honda was ejected.

EMS transported Dukes to NYC Health + Hospitals / Elmhurst where she was pronounced dead.

Lopez was taken into custody and transported to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in stable condition.

Three other occupants in the Honda reported no injuries as a result of the collision.

Lopez was arrested and charged.

His charges include reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an incident, vehicular assault, unlawfully fleeing a police officer, obstructing governmental administration, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, driving while ability impaired and refusal to take breath test.
