NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A woman is in critical condition after being stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle while walking in SoHo on Monday afternoon, police said.

The suspected assailant was taken into custody moments after the assault, which occurred near Wooster and Broome streets at about 3:04 p.m.

Police said that the suspect—a man in his 40s who NYPD Assistant Chief Jim McCarthy said appears to be mentally ill and gave officers a fake name—first attacked a 29-year-old woman, breaking a bottle on her back.

He then used the broken bottle to slash the younger women, leaving her critically injured.

Good Samaritans helped the victim, and medics transported her to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.
