NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Head to the famed Upper West Side market, Zabar’s, later this month to take advantage of some celebratory bagel deals, which are being offered as part of a partnership with the MTA to honor the subway turning 120.
Zabar’s—located at Broadway and West 80th Street—will offer the “commuter special” deals beginning Thursday, Oct. 24 through Sunday, Oct. 27 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
“These commuter specials are a way for both the MTA and Zabar’s to show customers we value their continued patronage and look forward to celebrating more milestones to come,” MTA chief customer officer Shanifah Rieara said.

A bagel with schmear will be $1.20 to commemorate the subway’s birthday; a bagel with schmear with a coffee will be $2.90 in a nod to subway fare; and a bagel with cream cheese and lox will be $9.90, to mark 90 years of Zabar’s.
For its part, the MTA will distribute hundreds of Zabar’s black and white cookies to lucky subway riders at four stations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens.

“Zabar’s has been a proud part of New York’s fabric for 90 years, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by partnering with another iconic institution, the MTA, on their 120th anniversary,” Zabar’s senior executive Ann Zabar said. “Both Zabar’s and the MTA have helped shape the culture of this city, and together, we’re honoring the past while looking forward to the future of New York.”
Messages reminding customers of the Zabar’s deal will be on digital screens in subway cars and stations until it comes, and the organizations will be holding a social media sweepstakes to win a special MTAxZabar’s gift basket.
A winner will be selected on Oct. 27, the 120th anniversary of the opening of New York City’s first underground rapid transit network, the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) subway.
The New York Transit Museum will also offer four nostalgia train rides on Oct. 27, and on Nov. 16.
