PASSAIC, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Two people, both in their 70s, were found dead after a 3-alarm apartment building fire was extinguished in Passaic on Sunday morning, fire officials and the mayor said.

The 3-alarm fire occurred at 16-20 Spruce Street at around 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, Passaic Fire Department Chief Patrick Trentacost Sr. said.

A man and a woman were found dead after the flames were extinguished on the “devastating Sunday morning,” Mayor Hector C. Lora said while speaking to the affected families on the scene.

Officials did not identify the victims, though Lora said that they were both in their 70s.

One firefighter sustained minor burns to his face in the blaze, authorities said.

Residents in adjacent units safely evacuated, and Lora said that the American Red Cross is responding to assist in relocation efforts. There are four units total in the apartment complex.
