RARITAN, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A 74-year-old man was arrested after a standoff where he fired a gun and barricaded himself inside a New Jersey home for nearly two hours, authorities said Friday.

According to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Roberts, police were called to a home in Hidden Pond Court at about 8:05 p.m. Saturday after a woman reported a man firing a gun inside the home.

Responding officers surrounded the home and evacuated neighbors, the prosecutor said.

“Officers on scene were able to make direct visual and verbal contact with the (woman), who was unharmed and secured inside in an upstairs bedroom of the residence,” Robertson said.

The officers tried speaking with Stephen McManus who refused to come outside and then barricaded himself in the home, Robertson said.

Members of the Somerset County SWAT team arrived just after 9 p.m., as hostage negotiators spoke with McManus, Robertson added.

Shortly before 10 p.m., McManus walked outside unarmed where he was taken into custody by the SWAT team.

The woman was unharmed and no injuries were reported, Robertson noted.

After obtaining a search warrant for the home, police found several firearms and ammunition.

McManus was charged with a second-degree weapons possession charge.

He was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, officials said.
