SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ (1010 WINS) — A man was charged with manslaughter after he punched a 70-year-old man, causing him to hit his head on the ground in New Jersey last month, according to Ocean County prosecutors.
Anthony Collins, 40, turned himself in to Seaside Heights Police Headquarters on Sunday over a week after a warrant was charging him with manslaughter and endangering an injured victim was issued for his arrest in the death of Robert May.
At about 4 p.m. on Sept. 18, police responded to the intersection of Central and Sumner avenues in Seaside Heights for a report of a fallen victim.
Upon arrival, May was found lying on the ground next to his bicycle with a cut on his head and bleeding.
He was treated at the scene but refused further medical assistance, authorities said.
Investigators determined that Collins allegedly assaulted May, causing him to fall off his bicycle and hit his head on the pavement.
About an hour after the first call police were told May had been acting erratically after the fall and was taken to Community Medical Center, officials said.
May's condition continued to worsen and he was transferred to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he died days later on Oct. 1, authorities said.
An autopsy by the Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office ruled May's death to be homicide caused by blunt force trauma.
A warrant was then issued for Collins and after he was identified as the suspect, his name was entered in the National Crime Information Center database.
Additional details about the alleged assault were not released.
Collins is being held in Ocean County Jail pending a hearing.
