NEWARK (1010 WINS) – A person infected with measles visited multiple locations in North Jersey last week, including Newark Airport, as well as a Marriott hotel, Starbucks, pub and medical center in Bergen County, state health officials said Thursday.

The New Jersey Department of Health said it was alerting residents to “potential exposure” after the new measles case was identified in a Michigan resident who visited the state while infectious between Tuesday, March 25 and Thursday, March 27.

The person landed at Newark Airport on Tuesday evening and stayed at the Marriott Park Ridge. They also visited a Starbucks in Park Ridge, Sean O'Casey's Irish Pub at the Marriott, as well as the Bergen New Bridge Medical Center. They flew out from Newark on Thursday evening. The full locations and times are below.

Potentially exposed individuals, if infected, could develop symptoms as late as April 17, officials said. As of Wednesday, no additional associated cases have been identified in the state.

The U.S. has more measles cases this year than in all of 2024, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said. Cases have been reported in nearly two dozen states, including New York and New Jersey. The multi-state outbreak confirms health experts' fears that the virus will take hold in U.S. communities with low vaccination rates.

Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that can linger in the air up to two hours after an infected person leaves. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that usually appears between three and five days after symptoms begin.

Officials said anyone who suspects an exposure or illness should call a health care provider before going to a medical office or ER to avoid infecting others.

Anyone who visited the following locations only during the specified dates and times may have been exposed to measles, officials said:
