MINEOLA, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Beloved Nassau County police K-9 Kai has died, the department announced Thursday "with a heavy heart."

Kai died Jan. 4 at the age of 12 after "dedicating his life" to the people of Nassau, police said. He was born March 25, 2011, and joined the NCPD in March 2012. He retired in early 2020.

In addition to helping make numerous arrests and apprehensions, Kai is credited with conducting well over 100 bomb sweeps and helping to find missing people, according to the department.

He and his handler, officer Chris Peters, also took part in demonstrations for various groups, including school children and community leaders.

"K-9 Kai, to those who didn't know him, looked as if he was all business at all times," the NCPD said. "But those who worked closely with K-9 Kai knew he was a mush at heart……except if you tried to take his 'Chuck It' ball.  Those of us in the unit can still hear the whistle of that ball through the air as K-9 Kai gave chase."

"He will be sorely missed but never forgotten," the department said.
