NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- "Jeopardy" host Alex Trebek died Sunday morning, the show announced Sunday. He was 80.

Canadian-born Trebek announced in March 2019 that he had been battling pancreatic cancer.

"Jeopardy is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends. Thank you, Alex," read a tweet posted to the show's account.

Trebek is survived by his wife Jean, and their two children Emily and Matthew.

When the show returned for its 37th season in September, Trebek said he was eager to return to the studio.

"On a personal level, I’m excited because it gets me out of the house. It gives me something to do on a regular basis, and I was missing that," said Trebek, who was undergoing treatment at the time for the cancer.

In July, just a few days before his memoir "The Answer Is ... Reflections on My Life," was going to be released, Trebek posted a YouTube video in which he provided an update on his health.

"I'm doing well," he said in the video. "I've been continuing my treatment and it is paying off. Though it does fatigue me a great deal, my numbers are good. I’m feeling great. In fact, during the break from the studio, I even wrote a book that will be coming out July 21."
