NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- More than one million Americans have received their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control said Wednesday.

Registered nurse Sandra Lindsay became the first New Yorker to receive a COVID-19 vaccine when the U.S. began its vaccine rollout on Dec. 14.

Surpassing 1 million vaccines on Wednesday marked an "early but important milestone," CDC Director Robert Redfield said in a statement.

"With cases of COVID-19 continuing to surge nationwide, this achievement comes at a critical time and will help to protect those on the frontlines — our healthcare providers treating COVID-19 patients — as well as our most vulnerable: elder individuals living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities," he said.

"There is currently a limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S., but supply will increase in the weeks and months to come," he added. "The goal is for everyone to be able to easily get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as large enough quantities are available."
