NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A recall of organic eggs sold at Costco has been classified as the highest risk level for potential Salmonella contamination, according to the FDA.
A Class I recall means “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” according to the FDA website.
Last month, Handsome Brook Farms, a New York-based organic egg supplier, issued the recall for its Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs. These eggs were distributed to 25 Costco locations in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee beginning Nov. 22.
The recall affects eggs with UPC 9661910680, Julian code 327, plant number P1363, and a use by date of Jan. 5, 2025.
The recall began after the company discovered that eggs meant for non-retail purposes were mistakenly packaged and distributed for retail sale. To prevent this from happening again, additional supply chain controls and employee retraining are being implemented, the company said.
Salmonella can cause severe infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. In rare cases, the infection can lead to more severe illnesses.
To date, no illnesses have been linked to the recall, according to Handsome Brook Farms.
Consumers who purchased the recalled eggs are advised to stop using them immediately and either dispose of them or return them to Costco for a full refund, according to the release.
