NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – The iconic gum Fruit Stripe has been discontinued, its manufacturer said Thursday.
The 54-year-old gum brand—known for its colorful stripes and mascot Yipes the Zebra—no longer appears on the website of the Ferrara Candy Company.
And in a statement to multiple outlets, a Ferrara spokesperson confirmed, “We have made the difficult decision to sunset Fruit Stripe Gum, but consumers may still be able to find product at select retailers nationwide.”
“The decision to sunset this product was not taken lightly, and we considered many factors before coming to this decision, including consumer preferences, and purchasing patterns — and overall brand trends for Fruit Stripe Gum,” the statement continued.
1010 WINS has reached out to Ferrara Candy for confirmation.
Fruit Stripe, first sold in the late 1960s, came in five main flavors—Wet n’ Wild Melon, Cherry, Lemon, Orange and Peach Smash.
The gum was already out of stock on Amazon as the news spread on Thursday morning.
Ferrara is also the company behind such classic brands as Nerds, Jujyfruits and Red Hots.
