NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Thousands reported outages Tuesday morning on social media platforms owned by Meta, including Facebook and Instagram.
The service was restored by noon according to Andy Stone, Meta's head of communications, who confirmed the outage on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services," Stone wrote. "We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologize for any inconvenience."
Users were encountering error messages when attempting to log into their accounts. While trying to log in, error messages like "Something went wrong. Please try again,” came up.
As of 10:30 a.m., Down Detector, a website that tracks reports of disruptions, received over 300,000 outage reports specifically for Facebook.

By 11 a.m., Down Detector had received over 500,000 error reports from affected users.
Stone acknowledged the outage initially on X and said that they "are working on this now."
Users shared posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their difficulties in accessing their accounts.
Cybersecurity expert Matthew Green said the outage appears to go beyond Meta. “There are a number of services having trouble with at least parts of their systems, particularly the ability to log into websites,” said Green, an associate professor of computer science and member of the Johns Hopkins University Information Security Institute. “This may indicate a common cause, like a failure at a major cloud services provider. At the moment nobody knows exactly what’s happening.”
It appears service has been restored for some users.
