Maryland man threatened to kidnap and kill Biden, Harris: authorities

James Dale Reed
Criminal complaint

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Federal authorities have charged a Maryland man who they say threatened to kidnap and kill Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate Sen. Kamala Harris.

James Dale Reed, of Frederick, allegedly left a handwritten note outside a neighbor's home that had Biden-Harris signs on the morning of Oct. 4, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday.

Part of the note reads: "We are the ones with these scary guns, we are the ones your children have nightmares about."

It goes on to threaten the lives of both Biden and Harris in graphic detail.

The man who left the letter was captured on a doorbell camera. That led to a tip that ultimately resulted in Reed's arrest, according to the complaint.

Reed, 42, initially denied leaving the letter but eventually admitted to it and was taken into custody, the complaint says.

He was charged with threatening a major candidate, which has a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment.

"We take these types of threats extremely seriously," U.S. Attorney Robert Hur's office said in a statement. "Such threats to commit violence are illegal and have no place in our democracy, and we will hold accountable those who make them."
