The shooting took place at Columbia Machine, a mold manufacturing, parts & repair business, around 2:30 p.m., according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

The shooter killed three people and injured one at the manufacturing plant before fleeing in a vehicle, according to police.

When Maryland State Police stopped the shooter, he got into a shootout with a state trooper. The shooter and the officer hit and injured each other, officials said. Both were transported for treatment.

"Multiple Federal Agencies, including the FBI and ATF, have responded to assist in the investigation into the incident," wrote the Sheriff's Office in a Facebook post. "There is no confirmed active threat to the community in relation to this incident."

“We are actively monitoring the mass shooting in Smithsburg right now, and our office is in contact with officials on the ground,” wrote House Rep. David Trone on Twitter. “If you're local, please stay away from the area as law enforcement responds.”
