NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Nestlé Prepared Foods recalled more than 92,000 pounds of Lean Cuisine baked chicken meals after five customers found pieces of plastic inside them, authorities said over the weekend.
The Utah-based company recalled around 92,206 pounds of its 8 and ⅝-ounce "Lean Cuisine Baked Chicken" trays — which include white meat chicken with stuffing, red skin mashed potatoes and gravy — after five customers logged complaints about "hard white plastic found in the product," the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a release Saturday.
The recall includes meals with a lot code of 0246595911, a "best before" date of October 2021 and an establishment number of "EST. P-9018" on the side, the release said. The products subject to the recall were produced and packaged on Sept. 2.
Nestlé first learned of the problem on Dec. 18 and "believes the mashed potatoes used in the production of the baked chicken meals products had pieces of a plastic conveyor belt that broke during production," the release said.
Customers who bought the meals subject to the recall should either throw them away or return them to the store where they purchased them, the USDA said.
Anyone with questions about the recall can contact Nestlé at 800-993-8625.
In its own release, Nestlé said it "identified the source of plastic in the factory and have fixed the issue."
"The quality, safety and integrity of Nestlé USA and Lean Cuisine products remain our number one priority," the company said. "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this action represents to both our consumers and retail customers."
"Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider," the company added.
