NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- O.J. Simpson died Wednesday following a battle with cancer, his family announced Thursday. He was 76.
"On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer," read a post, signed by "The Simpson Family," on the NFL icon's verified X account. Simpson's attorney confirmed his death to TMZ.
"He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren," the post continued. "During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."

San Francisco-born Simpson's legacy was tarnished in June 1994 when his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman were fatally stabbed in Los Angeles.

One of the most iconic moments was live TV coverage of Simpson, in a white Ford Bronco, being chased -- slowly -- on LA's 405 freeway.
Simpson -- who spent most of his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills -- was found not guilty in 1995 by a criminal court jury, following "the trial of the century." A separate civil trial jury two years later found him liable for the Brown and Goldman's deaths, and ordered him to pay $33.5 million to their families.
"I don’t think most of America believes I did it," Simpson told The New York Times in 1995, a week after the jury's verdict. "I've gotten thousands of letters and telegrams from people supporting me."

But his legal woes didn't end there.
About ten years later, the former Hertz rental car pitchman led five men -- two of whom had guns -- into a confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas hotel room.
Simpson was convicted by a jury of armed robbery and other felonies, and sent to jail at age 61. He was released on parole in Oct. 2017.
Simpson, whose parole ended in late 2021, had said, "I've basically spent a conflict-free life."
