NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, died at the age of 83 on Wednesday, according to one of her representatives.
Turner’s iconic voice and hit songs like “What’s Love got to Do With It” and "Private Dancer" brought her critical and popular acclaim in the early 1960s as well as an astonishing comeback in the 80s.
Turner, who was born in 1939, made her debut as a member of the duo Ike & Tina Turner in the early 60s belting out powerful blues and rock melodies. The “rolling on the river” refrain of Turner’s cover of “Proud Mary” remains a seminal pop culture touchstone today.
Turner divorced her common-law husband Ike and split from the band in 1973 as he became increasingly volatile and sometimes violent.
In the 1980s Turner launched a remarkable comeback that saw her greatest success as a performer.
It was during this phase of her career that she released her most well-known hit, "What's Love Got to Do with It."
That song skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 list and won her the Grammy for Record of the Year.
As a 44-year-old, she was the oldest female solo artist to top the charts.
In the 70s, 80s and 90s, Turner also took roles in action movies, including “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.”
Turner retired as a performer in 2009 after finishing a 50th Anniversary Tour.
In 2018, a musical about her life called “Tina” opened on Broadway.
She is survived by two of her children.
