NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A Newark Liberty International Airport worker was arrested at a security checkpoint Saturday after a screening revealed he was trying to enter the airport with a loaded gun, the TSA announced Tuesday.

The man, who officials did not identify, was allegedly carrying a 9mm handgun loaded with hollow-point bullets in his backpack.

A TSA officer saw the gun in an X-ray machine at Terminal C, and Port Authority Police arrested the man for weapons offenses.

In addition to the charges, the man lost his job at the airport.

“This was a good catch on the part of our TSA officers, who remain vigilant during this busy spring travel period,” said TSA Federal Security Director for New Jersey Thomas Carter. “Individuals who work at the airport are subject to the same robust security screening procedures as travelers.”
