WAYNE, N.J. (1010 WINS) — An 11-year-old boy was impaled through his thigh Monday by a large stick in a wooded in New Jersey on his way home from school, authorities said.

It happened near Anthony Wayne Middle School in Wayne where the child is a student, officials said.

According to Detective Capt. Daniel Daly, the boy and other students were taking a shortcut home through the woods after school when the child was hurt while sliding down a hill.

The boy slid down a steep embankment when his leg was speared by a "large stick" on the ground, Daly added. One friend called 911 while another ran back to the middle school to get help.

The school's resource officer and principal went to help along with a Wayne police patrol officer.

Members of the township's first aid squad, hospital paramedics and the Wayne Fire Department's Special Response Team rescued the boy and carried him out of the woods using a lightweight stretcher.

"He was then transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries which were not believed to be life threatening," Daly said.
