PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey police officer shot in the leg while responding to a domestic incident was released from a Pennsylvania hospital Sunday morning.

"The entire Phillipsburg community and surrounding communities wish [him] a speedy recovery and prayers to him and his family," said Phillipsburg Mayor Todd M. Tersigni.

The shooting happened at 10 Hanover St. around 1:15 p.m. Saturday, News 12 reported.

Warren County Prosecutor James Pfeiffer said the suspect opened fire on police once they arrived.

"The bullet went through the driver's side door and struck him in the leg," he said.

A woman, whose identity had not been released, was shot in the torso. The officer and the woman were both airlifted to St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Pfeiffer said it's believed the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

His identity has not been released at this time pending family notification.

The Warren County Prosecutor's Office said it's continuing to investigate.
