LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A delivery man stole nearly 9,000 Amazon packages from a New Jersey warehouse starting last year, according to a report.

A third-party contractor hired Bridgeton resident Akeem Johnson, 38, to transport packages from a Logan Township Amazon warehouse to USPS facilities in New Jersey, NJ.com reported, citing information from an affidavit filed by Logan Township police.

Johnson, however, stole 8,824 packages worth $274,483 instead of delivering them, the outlet reported.

Johnson told Amazon he stole the packages “because of the difficulty of surviving during the COVID pandemic,” according to the outlet.

His attorney information wasn’t immediately available Wednesday. 1010 WINS has reached out to Amazon for comment.
