NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New Jersey drivers are expected to get some relief at the gas pump this fall.
Gov. Phil Murphy and the New Jersey Treasury Department announced Tuesday that the state's gas tax will decrease by 8.3 cents per gallon by Oct. 1.
State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio said fuel consumption in 2021 aligned with projections made a year ago as well as usage — scheduled to be above 2020's — contributes to the gas price decrease.
“We are pleased that this dedicated funding stream continues to provide billions of dollars across the state to support our critical transportation infrastructure needs," she said.
A 2016 gas tax law passed during former Gov. Chris Christie's administration, requires the State’s Transportation Trust Fund "to provide $16 billion over eight years to support critical infrastructure improvements to the state’s roadways and bridges."
The tax must generate roughly $2 billion per year — if not it goes up.
