NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- An inmate was sentenced on Wednesday to an additional 20 years in prison for a 2021 brutal beating of another inmate that left him with permanent brain damage.

His time will be served consecutively after his 12-year sentence for a 2019 homicide.

Byad Lockett, 22, of Newark, took part in the near-fatal attack of Jayshawn Boyd inside the Essex County Correctional Facility in New Jersey along with six other assailants in September 2021.

Lockett was found guilty of attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and weapons offenses for the beating.

The attack was was captured on the jail's surveillance camera showed all seven assailants kicking, punching and stomping on Boyd before one of the detainees dropped a microwave oven on his head,

"This was one of the most savage beatings I've ever seen. It was barbaric. It was inhumane," Judge Ronald Wigler said. "And each time that video played, you were smirking. You were smiling. You were enjoying what you were watching."

Lockett himself offered an apology in court, claiming he was not on his medication at the time of the attack.

Lockett must serve 17 years of his sentence related to the attack on Boyd before he becomes eligible for parole under New Jersey's No Early Release Act.
