LAKEWOOD, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Police arrested a 59-year-old man in Maryland earlier this week hours after he fatally beat and strangled his live-in girlfriend to death in their New Jersey home, authorities said Friday.
John Filistovich was taken into custody in Salisbury, Maryland, on Tuesday after state police found him in his girlfriend’s car parked on the side of a road, officials said.
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, at about 12:15 p.m., police were called to their Lakewood home on Thornbury Court for a welfare check where Betty Perry, 60, was found dead on a bedroom floor.
Further investigation revealed that Perry's 2015 Hyundai Elantra was not at the residence.
A post-mortem examination revealed Perry's cause of death was blunt-force injuries to the head, neck, and chest with asphyxiation.
Filistovich was charged with theft in connection to the unlawful taking of Perry’s vehicle.
He taken to the Wicomico County Corrections Center, where he remains awaiting extradition back to New Jersey.
